According to the Padma Purana, Kamada Ekadashi is associated with the story of Lalit and Lalita, a Gandharva couple in the court of Lord Indra. Due to a mistake committed by Lalit during a celestial performance, he was cursed to become a demon, and Lalita was left devastated.

On the advice of sages, Lalita observed Kamada Ekadashi vrat with complete devotion to Lord Vishnu. Pleased by her faith, Lord Vishnu freed Lalit from the curse and restored him to his divine form.
