It is observed during the Shukla Paksha of the Ashadha month (June–July) and marks the beginning of Chaturmas, the four sacred months when Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra (divine sleep).

It is believed that Lord Vishnu awakens on Devutthana Ekadashi in the Kartik month, marking the end of Chaturmas.
